Blood pressure

The force of blood against artery walls as the heart pumps.

What it is

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against artery walls as the heart pumps.[1,2]

Why it matters

When blood pressure stays high over time, the heart works harder and risk context can extend to heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney failure.[1]

Root causes of abnormal values

  • Physical core: Higher inflow, higher outlet resistance, and stiffer arterial walls raise pressure; insufficient pumped flow, excessive vessel dilation, and too little circulating blood volume lower pressure. Blood pressure is not a concentration. It is pressure inside the arterial tube system: heart contraction pushes blood into arteries, arterial walls take that force, and smaller arteries decide how easily blood can leave into tissues.[1,2,3,5]
  • Why pressure rises: The main mechanical chain is: more cardiac output or more blood volume fills the arterial system harder; narrower arterioles raise systemic vascular resistance, so the same flow needs more pressure to pass; stiffer large arteries store less stretch energy, so each heartbeat becomes a higher pressure wave. The kidney-hormone axis can reinforce this by retaining sodium and water and by tightening blood vessels through angiotensin II and aldosterone.[3,4,5,6]
  • Why pressure falls or swings: The opposite physical failures lower or destabilize pressure: the heart sends out too little flow, vessels dilate too much and lose resistance, circulating volume is too low, or posture/autonomic control fails to keep enough pressure after standing. That is why low pressure and orthostatic changes are often about pump output, vessel tone, volume, and reflex control rather than one single named disease.[3,2,5]
  • Reading layer: A single reading can still be a measurement event rather than a stable physical state. Cuff fit, arm position, recent activity, caffeine, conversation, pain, stress, and white-coat context can change the measured pressure.[2,7]
  • Clinical boundary: Disease names such as primary hypertension, kidney disease, sleep apnea, thyroid disease, medication effect, or pregnancy-related hypertension are upstream ways this pressure system can be pushed out of range. BioConst can expose the pressure chain, but it cannot identify which driver applies to one person from a webpage.[1,2,6]

What it affects

  • A blood pressure measurement is interpreted from repeated measurements and clinical context, not one webpage reading.[2]

Interpretation traps

  • BioConst does not set personal blood-pressure targets or medication choices.[1]
