Beta-amyloid

A protein fragment that can accumulate as plaques in Alzheimer disease and is targeted by some approved antibodies.

What it is

Beta-amyloid comes from breakdown of a larger amyloid precursor protein and can collect between neurons as plaques in Alzheimer disease.[1]

Why it matters

Anti-amyloid antibodies target amyloid biology and have been approved for certain early Alzheimer disease contexts.[2,3]

What it affects

  • Confirmed amyloid pathology is part of the treatment population described in FDA donanemab approval information.[2]

Interpretation traps

  • Removing or reducing amyloid is not the same as promising restoration of lost memory or full disease reversal.[1,2]
