Vertebral fracture assessment

A low-dose lateral spine image often performed on a DXA system to look for vertebral compression fractures.

What it is

VFA is a low-dose X-ray view of the spine that may be performed on a DXA machine.[1]

Why it matters

A vertebral compression fracture can change fracture-risk interpretation even when a density number is not extreme.[2]

What it affects

  • ISCD describes VFA as designed to detect vertebral fractures, not to diagnose all spine abnormalities.[2]

Interpretation traps

  • Follow-up imaging decisions belong in clinician-guided context.[2]
