X-ray

A basic imaging method for bone shape, fractures, sclerosis, lytic change, and deformity context.

What it is

X-ray shows bone shape and many structural changes, but it is not the same as a DXA bone-density measurement.^[1]

Why it matters

Some conditions are structural or focal, so imaging context can matter more than a single density score.^[2]

What it affects

X-ray can help show fracture, deformity, sclerosis, lytic change, or Paget-like structural change in the right setting.^[2,1]

Interpretation traps

A normal or nonspecific X-ray does not rule out every early bone problem.^[1]
