X-ray

A basic imaging method for bone shape, fractures, sclerosis, lytic change, and deformity context.

What it is

X-ray shows bone shape and many structural changes, but it is not the same as a DXA bone-density measurement.[1]

Why it matters

Some conditions are structural or focal, so imaging context can matter more than a single density score.[2]

What it affects

  • X-ray can help show fracture, deformity, sclerosis, lytic change, or Paget-like structural change in the right setting.[2,1]

Interpretation traps

  • A normal or nonspecific X-ray does not rule out every early bone problem.[1]
